"Rebirthing", also called "cobathing", is a technique designed to aid in
situations where a baby is having difficulties in latching on and
nursing.
The theory is that the warm water, along with the skin-to-skin
contact between baby and mother, (re)stimulates baby's natural instincts
to root, latch, and nurse.
I have heard of absolutely amazing results
with this technique, where babies who seemed to have no interest in the
breast started rooting and nursing, quite literally, within seconds of
getting in the tub.
Of course, not all babies will respond so quickly,
and some babies may need a couple of baths before some benefit is seen.
This technique is often used in cases where premature birth, c-section,
or some other factor has intervened and not allowed baby the initial
bonding and latching time which would otherwise have immediately
followed birth.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
Rebirthing should be done only with another adult
present to assist with baby!
Newborn infants are very floppy and
slippery in the bathtub, and one slip could cause your baby to drown!
This can be a very effective technique, but must be done safely!
